The United Kingdom is the world’s largest producer and exporter of legal cannabis for medical and scientific use. In 2016, the UK produced 95 tonnes of legal cannabis—accounting for 44.9% of the global total—and exported 67.7% of the world’s legal cannabis that year, primarily in the form of pharmaceutical products. Despite this dominant position in production and exports, the UK’s domestic medical cannabis market remains limited, with only 4.6 tonnes of cannabis supplied to patients in 2023, while 27.3 tonnes were imported to meet demand. The country holds one of the world’s largest stockpiles, with over 507 tonnes in reserve by the end of 2023.
