UK Cannabis farmer hid in loft for eight hours

Really don't get why they don't invest in tech to nullify heat, smell, nor why they always pick buildings in the middle of towns and cities. The tech exists, carbon filters, heat scrubbers, insulation, etc. Every police force has a helicopter and that helicopter will have FLiR capability, so if they happen to be over a town centre at night looking for someone, any building that has a grow op in it will be lit up like a christmas tree unless they employed steps to avoid it.

I second you, S.O.H, they are mugs.

Do room-based ops also light up by the way? I assume this heat problem is mostly with loft-based grow ops. I mean some flower needs temps like 22-24C, that can be any personal home's normal winter/spring temperature, so if they're not using the loft...?

It's more of an issue with bulk growing. I knew someone long ago that did it and he used to cover all the walls and ceilings with polystyrene to insulate the room. Then grew in a tent and the air coming out of it was pumped through a carbon and hepa filter. He would also run a cooling fan in the same room so the ambient temperature would be cool. I suppose it depends on the lifetime of the grow. if it's a get in grow, get out after harvest, then it's less of a thing.

But yeah growing one or two plants, then maybe tent and carbon filter. As you say, most houses have an ambient temperature of 20C+, especially in Winter.

If you are growing in a loft, i'd get a roll of some of that cheapo aluminium bubble insulation that reflectsheat back. Maybe throw some polystyrene behind it. It's worth doing just to insulate your house and cut down on your heating bills. But a side effect of it is it doesn't allow heat to escape and should shield you from FLiR on some level.

I honestly never knew of anyone who got caught with a percy grow through helicopter intel(still made everyone paranoid though) and I live in a built up area with the thing up all the time and whether they have stopped looking in this way I don't know but with the effort it's easy to create an environment in the attic shielded from outside and is probably best practice anyway as then you control the environment feeding into any tent or whatever used.
Room based is a case of extracting to outside the room to stop recirculating and reheating the air but for instance a 600w light in a room would not raise any alarms and the radiator will probably give off more heat for instance.

I would guess electricity usage and smell are the great indicators of a potential grow going on. Maybe someone's loose lips, sink ships too. But beyond that I don't know for aerial intel. I don't do it myself, nor had any need. If I needed anything in the past it was always available, so growing was never something I needed to do.

We used to rent a house out in wales to these Chinese guys, they would pay us cash every month we never thought anything of it, always paid on time never had any issues, about a year of them renting my dad gets a call from the police, “you need to come to your property”. They had turned the whole 4 story house into a massive grow, 9 bedrooms I counted about 40-50 plants in each room. They had rewired the electrics so it was feeding off the rest of the street and that’s how they got caught. Electric bills.

If I knew then what I know now and all that 😅

Similar. My mothers friend died about 20 years back and her house across the road from theirs got sold to some shifty looking Indian guy. Six months later it got raided. They just kept coming out with full black bags of weed. Like over 100. Apparently in the cellar there were two rooms full of loose weed, like he obviously had no clue and just filled these rooms to the roof. Then the plants came out and there were so many plants. Like every single room. I've know people who grew, but this guy did it on legendary levels but he apparently had no business skills. Even now, 20 years later, when you walk past it you can still smell it a little. The terpenes obviously got into the stone work, the wood and pretty much anything else. I was talking to the guy who lives in the cellar apartment a couple of years back and he says no matter how much they paint it, it still smells of good weed, but he bought it because he loves the smell.
