I am after some advice if we have any legal beagles or anyone with experience of instructing solicitors? I recently emailed a large multinational employment law firm and outlined my case, I was asked to call new enquiries which I did and was quoted 2-4 hours for initial investigation with 2 hours being the aim which would be paid on account at £700 plus vat. I enquired as to how soon they could start and at this point was stopped and advised that somebody had already looked at my email and they would require £10,000 on account to proceed.
I asked at this point if I could speak with someone to discuss what potential payout I may be looking at, strength of case etc and was told no, I tried a different tact, still no, advised to contact ACAS to discuss strength of case, queried this as ACAS state on their website they will not give legal advice and to contact a firm of solicitors... at which point new enquiries politely thanked me and hung up.
So my question is did I just get the wrong person or do solicitors expect you to stump up £10k without giving you any inclination as to the possible outcomes?
I have reached out to ACAS and the CAB for completeness but honestly was a bit shocked, I expected to have to pay them up front but would at least expect to have my chances and potential outcomes outlined before being asked to hand over that kind of amount...
