Moving from the UK (Split Discussion)

There's always going to problems and stuff mate.
I personally try and not get involved in it all unless I get caught up in it.
My big problem is having to pay for my medication while I'm sick. I have mentioned this to surgeons,consultants and doctors but it will never change.
I am just glad that I can pick the right medications and have choices

Agree. Its the same for me + countless others. Other than working during sickness or escape the UK - which sounds fantastic until you realise how expensive everywhere became. The cigarettes are close to the UK prices in NL now. Huge property bubble = nowhere to live cheaply anymore in the cities.
It was a very cheap country pre Euro now its worse than here really as worse increases - they put dutch coffee up by so much some cannot afford it - its the same as us being charged a minimum price for any tea....Its also physically close to full in Amsterdam in certain areas. Insane.

I agree. I looked at house prices in Holland and they are well expensive. I would like to move there but not to work but I can only go for 90 days at a time

People I know there became asset rich bc of this bubble. Great if you got the money and took a massive risk buying abroad lol. Screws every1 really as they can't afford to move... same as here but like London - looney tunes prices.

If I'm moving its got to be out of here... So eastern europe. Its an extreme amount of hassle tho - but I suspect its all part of mass migrations plans so that every1 has to move everywhere for the wrong reasons. I'm still good friends with a couple of bosses who now recruit locally @high knowledge places like CZ ect - so I could be a local hire maybe lol.
Its crazy isn't it? I'm disabled and I have to move country, which is a billion times harder than moving inside the UK, huge risk then crazy happens which is getting too regular since 2020... so maybe got to do the same again. Its insane. So if I can stick it here, god help me I'd prefer that obviously.

I've spent the past 5 years torn between relocating in the UK or abroad, maybe to Devon (ancestral home) or the Highlands (my grandmothers line) - or moving abroad. I'd love to live in Germany for a few years, but the bureaucracy/authoritarianism would drive me insane (why my mother left in DDR times). The US is top choice, despite its many issues, I grew up with an American Step-Mom and extended family - I still maintain my US number and ties there.

One of my brothers is a US citizen, living in Virginia - the other is a German citizen, living in Thuringia. Both were born here locally in Northants, and chose to relocate.

It's very hard to be optimistic about the future of the UK as things stand.

Thuringia is a fantastic name I'm trying to imagine someone pref German saying that. US and Germany both very strong military cultures from what I can tell. Never made it to the US but used to work in Bochum quite a bit when I was at Nokia donkeys ago. They offered me work but I didn't like the work culture even tho very serious pay for engineers, - some earned more than my boss lol - all that but no. It was how I assume all military type things (see banks too) are run - the bosses can be nasty+terrifying and the workers bowed there heads a little I noticed. Sort of looked down. wow. No thanks.

Agree on the UK but the more I hear about whats happening in NL they are running at least 2 large drills to prepare for War - gut reaction > I think Its better to stay here. Grim but true. Were still a beautiful (if downtrodden) set of nations and ultimately islands last I looked so my gut is stick on one. So Scottish Islands affordable? Not sure about the weather tho altho imagine how beautiful and peaceful....

But saying that, its very hard for you. I met quite a few peeps around my age when I was in NL cross-culture (sometimes more) you will feel a huge draw to your childhood places (I think your grandmother knows best) - some were diplomats kids - their lives - sounds great - its actually quite a terrible life having too move very often but I think you prob know this already.

Yeah both definitely more militaristic countries, family served in both - my own experiences with banks in both countries are that you have so many fewer rights than in the UK, and way more fees

I love our country, but feel European countries in general are being led down a path towards war. Maybe our island is a little safer than the mainland, especially Eastern Europe, but we will be a prime target if we ever do see WW3.

Honestly, Scottish Isles has been a temptation for me too. If the prospect of war concerns you, it'd be amongst the safest bets in the UK with so little industry.

I quite like German (never say this outside of Germany almost anywhere lol) I'm too old for running for cover so I got a decent supply of big pharma for diabetes+ I can get by with bud or try to grow it if I cant get it. Bud seems to lower my blood sugar very well another huge benefit. Besides I'm a shut in right now so its early days but I'm getting travelling again it keeps me interested lets say. I think you should follow your dreams...wherever they take you...
PS On war its long been added to my terrible, but secure mental box containing all those things I can't do anything about. On a lighter note I hope you get your cheese- you really earned it.
PPS whilst I think on - a childhood friend lives in Scotland - they had a dream job - get this - working with a touring theatre company that drove around the Isles for about 5/6 weeks during a summer can you imagine?
