Next step in cannabis experiment: Dozens of coffeeshops selling only regulated weed

The Netherlands’ experiment with regulated cannabis production has entered a new, crucial phase. From today, all coffeeshops in the ten participating municipalities are only allowed to sell cannabis grown by regulated cultivators. They can still sell tolerated hash bought through the “back door” for the time being.

This involves almost 80 coffeeshops in Almere, Arnhem, Breda, Groningen, Heerlen, Hellevoetsluis, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Tilburg, and Zaanstad. This is a big step because it puts an end to the tolerance policy - in which coffeeshops were allowed to sell cannabis, but authorities turned a blind eye to where they got their supply because cultivation was illegal - in these municipalities.

According to the coffeeshops, consumers are enthusiastic about the legal supply of cannabis. But there are concerns about whether the growers can keep up with demand. “There were still some problems in recent weeks,” Stan Esmeijer of the Coffeeshop Platform Nijmegen told NOS. Popular legal types of weed are not always available. Hash, which is widely used, is hardly available at all.

After coffeeshops raised the alarm about supply issues in the run-up to this next step in the experiment, the government decided to allow the sale of illegal hash for a few more months. But according to the government, the cannabis supply is sufficient.

“If that is not the case, we will have a serious problem,” Esmeijer said about the cannabis supply. “Then we have empty shelves and we fear that street trading and nuisance will increase.”

The supply concerns stem from only five of the ten regulated growers being fully operational. The rest are still starting up or haven’t even started cultivating yet. Some struggled to find a suitable location, and the search and screening of investors took longer than expected. Growers also had trouble opening bank accounts.

“The intention was to start this new phase with more growers, so I understand the concerns of the coffeeshops,” Rick Bakkers of Hollandse Hoogtes, one of the ten growers, told NOS. The company started with 15 people six months ago and has since grown to 140 employees working in the cultivation halls in Bemmel. Hollandse Hoogtes supplies around 200 kilograms per week.

Bakker thinks that the active growers can supply enough cannabis for now, and once all growers are up and running, there will always be enough choice.

Theres never enough! So basically the majority of the weed in amsterdam will all be the same choices in each coffeeshop?? I cant see every grower getting regulated only the big guns with the money.

Do you think regulated import weed will hit more shelvs on the legal side?

I know near every shop in dam is advertising cali and canadian products but is lacking the supply.

Such a shame. Id love to see them shelvs once this goes into action... see what options you can an cannot get.

I see it mentions 1 grower going from 15 workers to 140, i think you will see more of this with the ones already with the money.. the big guns, and the little guys not standing the chance to even get going. Thats why i think the choic or strains and products will be limited.

Its a disaster - my advice is to visit before they bring this to the randstad cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague etc. All about big money, as usual.

I dont think the coffee shops are enforcing this as my wife just got back from dam litteraly 2 days ago. Im in tunisia so obviously couldnt go. She said nothings changed regarding what was on offer. But we will see. I like my weekend trips to dam every now and then. I hope it doesnt change as they say i wont, in the shops as it was hard enough to find the good stuff as it is. Big advantage was getting to see the product before buying it tho so bonus on that. Lets hope they keep their variety

Yes its like I say go in the next year or so before they do implement it in Amsterdam+Rotterdam. Its big business who want control, they actually play both sides (illegal/legal).

And yet there still making their government billions in tax in any legality status.

Stupid. This will no doubt favor the big pharmaceutical companies in the long run pushing aside the little man as usual lol

Big P(harma) are the biggest crooks on the planet so yeah its a good excuse to visit before its a shadow of what it was.

Ive been going to amsterdam over the past 20 years. Always changing, the weeds always changing. Ill be curious to see what options comsumers will have with the regulated bud only. Import import import. Its should be a world wide regulated market. Like food!!

Lets hope it runs the same as the U.S. tho in by means of More Regulated products than you can go through, but that being said the market is so much bigger over there so more companies, more options

I don't think they would do this in Amsterdam or they would lose a fortune in tourism but they could do it everywhere else eventually in Holland
They will unfortunately as poilitically lots of residents got tired of hordes of wasted (sex) tourists - also they are starting to build the "Erotic Zone", located out of the city so they can remove the sex workers so that the Red Light district can be fully gentrified (lots of money there too), its only a matter of time.

They already moved half the red light to just certain parts of the city. Even took out a bridge or 2 on the canals.

They wont open any new coffee shops, to own one, one has to be on a waiting list to take over a previous one. I see that being very expensive for people.

I see there making it very hard to set up new businesses in this area of retail. Do they (dutch goverment) even want the business. I feel expanding a supply and demand would only produce more tax income

AFAIK The kind of money behind these changes is the huge private equity funded corporates like incura, its the extremely well funded and powerful usual suspects legal "criminals". This is societal change money so they will fund it almost infinitely until they take the market. Like Amazon did and do.

Maddness is what it is.
Honestly I looked into all this stuff and peeps like Boris are Phoenician, him and his ilks ancestry can be dated well before the bible... They are the money and the not so hidden real mafia.

Yea nothing will stop that if there is money involved. I alway said there are people running government's not the other way round

The real power quickly learnt to hide itself several millenia ago. The really crackers thing is this time period now is effectively identical to biblical times, except with technology overlayed on top - which means they get to know all about us but more + more people starting to think and research their existence, esp since covid which they made $Tns from. Its the world oldest cartel.
