Hi community,

I am new to medical cannabis in the UK (I have medical cannabis in the USA as well) and I just had my follow up appointment with Dispensed.

Let me tell you more about me. I am a 54 years old man and I have a condition called Psoriatic Monoarthritis. All the joints in my body are affected and I live with some level of pain, stiffness 24/7. I have tried all sorts of pain killers and anti inflammatories, prescribed or over the counter but the side effects are unbearable for me. Now I use pain management and cannabis (when it was available). I have been using it daily since I found out about this condition but I have been on and off for the last 40 odd years.

However, with help of treatment for this condition and use of cannabis have helped me to live a normal life (with limitation) and being able to keep a job.

I just had my follow up appointment with Dispensed (my first and only clinic at the moment) and I want to tell you about my experience with Dispensed so far.

I had my first appointment with a doctor and we had a nice chat about my pre condition and any mental health condition, especially schizophrenia. I have none of it.

I told the doctor I didn’t want gamma/beta irradiated flowers and I did not want to ingest cannabis (it can be quite overwhelming to me). In the end I was prescribed 30g of Kalifornia (irradiated flower), 30ml oil (ingesting) and a vape cartridge.

The flower did not have any smell or taste but it was quite potent. Oil has been tried a few times and it is a good medicine for 3-4 hours but after that I crash, I have to sleep for a few hours. I am new to vape cartridges and I was pleased with it until I found out it contains ‘botanical terpenes’ . I would like more natural cannabis … non irradiated, no added anything. I do not know if you guys understand me.

I had to wait a few days to see if I would be accepted by a panel of professionals and waited another day to get my first prescription that cost me £395 and I cannot afford that every month.

As I mentioned above I just had my follow up appointment with the same doctor as I had the first appointment and I raised my concerns about not getting what I wanted and how I could get what I want. The doctor said straight to me that this is medical cannabis and not recreational cannabis and she will prescribe what she thinks is good for me and she was quite pushy for things I did not want as well .I do not have my repeat prescription yet so I do know what I am getting.

What I do not understand, I was prescribed CBPM and why I can not pick what I want. Some months I can afford the cheap one and maybe on my birthday I can afford a treat. I would like to have more flexibility and easier access to my medicine. Perhaps try a different clinic.

I am sorry for writing everything together, introduction, clinic, product reviews. If I did it wrong please send me to the right direction to open other posts. I am very bad with social media.

If you want to ask me something, feel free and I will keep you all informed about this new journey in my life where I leave the back streets deals behind and come to the sun and the green grass!! With affordable and flexible access to my medicine.

Thank you.
I hope this helps.
Have a lovely day.

Fantastic intro @Dalata + welcome :) Thank you for the info on Dispensed. You have the absolute right to choose your meds mate. 100%.

Welcome to the community @Dalata and there is a lot you go into in your post that many of here understand fully ranging from Botanical terpenes to having no choice in selection of your meds and let me reassure you this is not the norm in MC but a few clinics do take this route but many of us choose freely from available meds and from you describe if things don't take a sharp turn for the better I 'd be looking at transferring clinics which may sound a major hurdle but can be quite simple now you are a patient and at least that way you will be in control of what you pay for and be able to apply your experience of Cannabis from years of use like many of here .

Hey thanks for sharing your experience

With other clinics you can choose what you want, this clinic has a model where they only want to prescribe their own strains to you as that's where they make their money

Would be worth looking at other clinic options on the MedBud wiki comparison page, and looking through the threads of the clinic names on here for people's feedback to see what you think is best for you and your situation

Ask questions and there's a few of us will try and answer

Fantastic intro @Dalata + welcome :) Thank you for the info on Dispensed. You have the absolute right to choose your meds mate. 100%.
Thank you Node for the warm welcoming.

Yes, we need be able to pick our medicine all the way.

As a newbie I do not want to rush into things. Maybe try another clinic because the pharmacy ( Specials Pharma) I use has a nice wide range of products.

It is nice to see a moderator showing up on my post. Cheers

It seems that two groups of clinics tends towards more restrictive prescribing policies - brand new clinics like Dispensed who naturally haven't built up many industry relationships yet and maybe have a more limited formulary owing to their relative freshness to the industry, and maybe only have a few patients so far and are keen not to take any risks too early in the game, and older much more advanced clinics like Curaleaf who probably have such a large patient base and number of new patients each month that they can afford to avoid the risk entirely by just taking the simple patients who will take what they're given and not cause too much fuss, and letting the others contribute to a high turnover rate.

I can see the logic from both sides, although I'm definitely most sympathetic to a new clinic trying to avoid early risk. However, the way the private market works it's going to be more sympathetic to the large companies that do it than the new companies. Large companies can just rely on their huge numbers and retain the easy patients while rinsing the rest for a few months and then watching them leave, but the small companies can only watch them leave and then wonder why they can't get their business off the ground. But for you as the consumer, the private nature of it means you can vote with your feet and the business will have to change accordingly.

Having said all that, to be honest I'm not entirely sure WHY there are clinics that let us choose! It is pretty mental, I've never encountered another medicine in the history of my life where I'd be given a list of hundreds of options to choose from and I can make completely different choices month to month. But then again, this is one of my few experiences with private healthcare as 99% of my medical history is with the NHS. Perhaps as an American you're far more used to choice in medicine than I am! For me it seems pretty alien and like it's about to be removed by any moment.

Lank72,

I went for Dispensed because the price tag and no strings, it says there is no fee for changing clinics. Some of the clinics are more expensive to start with.

I try to make the ends meet every month and every penny counts. A membership to any club is a investment and it has been thought through out.

I will try other clinic as I gather more information about CBPM.

Thank you for your input.

Welcome to the Community @Dalata and great intro 👍. Change clinics if your not happy, there is flower available that is non irradiated and being experienced with Cannabis you should be able to choose your own medical flower. You have already stated that you didn't want to ingest your medicine and they have totally ignored your requests. Head over to CB1 Medical, its free to transfer and free for the first 12mths, after this its £50 per year. You won't find a lot of non irradiated flower but there is some out there available. There is some nice irritated flower out there and must agree with you irritated flower can be very bland and unappealing. Hope you get to enjoy your Journey into MC and everything improves for you mate. I did know how its feels not to be able to choose your own medicine, I was once there myself 👍

Hi BudGuy,

I disagree with you why you shouldn't be able to choose our medicine.

I was prescribed THC/CBD and other canabinoides, terpenes, flavonoides from the cannabis plant and that is what matter. The brand is down to the customer.

I will give an exemple, you are prescribed some pain killer and you go down the chemistry to get it and they do not have that specific brand and then they offer you generic one, which contains the same substance as the original one.

If you want to take some ibuprofen and it doesn't matter it is tesco, asda or that expensive brand.

Last and not least, the same strain stop working after a few weeks and I see a big different when I change strain. 30g of 3 different strains is better than 30g of the same.

I am not american, I have lived and worked in many countries. In USA you get your medcard and you go to a dispensary and pick what you want.

I can't add anymore than what's already been said other than I am on the same/similar journey and with the help of the very experienced folk on here I have been guided to join a new clinic only a few weeks after my first consultation, as guess what, I wasn't listened to either !

Very best of luck on your MC journey and fingers crossed you find something you're looking for soon (y)

Hello & welcome

the Dr is correct to say that it is medical cannabis not recreational but.., you should have freedom of choice.
Wether it’s a financial decision, or a preference not to ingest the medicine or maybe a certain terpene that doesn’t agree with you.. you should choose what you are paying for.

I would be looking to move clinics, I did it recently and it’s very straightforward.

Dooby Doo,

Thank you for you nice words and hopefully I will get what I want.

This CB1 was my second choice.

Yeah, I'm not saying you shouldn't able to choose, just that I'm really not used to it, to the point that it does feel a bit "wrong", even though there's no reason it should be, and I'm very pleasantly surprised that it is the way that it is. I guess part of the reason I put off starting medical cannabis even though I was vaguely aware of it for years was the assumption that it would be extremely limited and highly regimented and take some of the pleasure out of it, because that was just my experience of virtually all medicine up to that point. But then it probably was pretty limited in the early years and I'm just jumping in now where the choice is pretty insane - overwhelming in fact.

You're right about different brands, etc, but often that is exactly the same chemical formula and there's literally no difference other than packaging, so you can see why doctors would have no reasoning whatsoever for restricting you to one brand.

And I agree completely, the actual effectiveness of the medicine in the case of cannabis can be modified by making different choices regularly, and rather than that being something weird compared to other medicines, it's probably something they should adopt with other medicines as well as we know that the tolerance-building effect can be particularly life-destroying with opioids etc and perhaps rotating those medicines can have a similar result (strong analgesic effect for lower dose).

I just feel like if some politician got a bee in his bunnet about the amount of choice available to medical cannabis patients, they'd find it easy to convince people that it was abnormal for medicine to be as free as medical cannabis is, and that it's a some sort of rogue pseudo-recreational industry. But then those same politicians are probably all on private healthcare plans funded by the rest of us which offers them the same level of choice in virtually every other aspect of medicine.

Hi Dalata, Welcome and sorry to hear about your experience, I'm also new and just received my first prescription today with 60g of flower (6 different strains of MY choice) I highly recommend switching clinics at this point I think you've been unlucky with your doctor, my doctor also tried to push the exact same kinda thing overly suggesting oils and vapes to the point where I felt I was almost arguing with him before we even hit the subject of flower... you just need to really stand your ground in the initial consultation and make it extremely clear your not interested in anything but flower. I'm with CB1 Medical they have been amazing I really can't fault them at this stage apart from some pricing issues but that may be resolved at some point hopefully.

Hi Dalata and welcome. I'm new here myself and recently applied for MC with Dispensed, my first foray into MC so it's great to hear your experience so far and sorry to hear you're not getting the flexibility in medicine you've asked for, especially as you've got experience with MC in the USA and have a good idea of what works best for you.

It's been really interesting reading this thread and hearing peoples different experiences and thoughts on MC and I empathise with all the above points.

I suppose MC is intrinsically private health care and I'm too much of a beginner to know how it all works with the relationships between clinics and pharmacies etc but imagine it's similar to big pharma in that there's money for them to be made and possible deals between certain clinics and pharmacies. Unfortunately, I do have to be somewhat cost-driven so Dispensed's model seemed like the best path to entry for me as a newbie without being tied in for a long time if it's something I don't want to do long term.

If I compare it to my experience of talking to NHS GP's in the past, especially when it comes to long term conditions, I've been able to have a conversation with them about medication and they have often said "What do you want to try?" or are really receptive to my suggestion of trying something if it sounds like I've done my homework on it, which I always do before asking for something before putting it in my body. So totally understand that patients should be able to have input into what they want.

I also appreciate Doctors have a duty of care and have to do their due diligence and make sure the patient isn't just requesting something because they've seen someone else say it worked really well for them as everyone responds differently.

NHS or Private care, sounds obvious but I realise doctors are human and you sometimes get good/understanding ones and not so good ones I guess so I wonder how much of it is down to the Clinic or down to the Doctor. I've had Doctors from the same GP tell me to go home and get a self-help book one day then another day another doctor for the same thing who is seemingly really empathetic and offering a talking therapy or something more constructive.

Although I'm not naive to cannabis, it's my first time trying MC for my ailments so understood the Doctor heavily promoting oil only for my first script before we talked more to each other and ended up putting Lunar Circus 7:7 onto it as well to more safely try out in conjunction with the oil. Will be interesting to see how much flexibility there is if/when I want to try out different strains after that.

Good luck with your journey. It sounds very much like there's a lot of clinics that will more easily cater to your needs if things don't go well where you currently are and can be pretty straight forward to change if needs be.

Hi C_Mac,

Thank you for popping over. I agree with you. Doctors have different point of views than us but in the end of the day we, the patients, know what is better for us and what works and what doesn't work and maybe what is working for me won't work for you. That is why in any treatment is import 'try and error' for both parties (doctor and patient) sometimes a treatment doesn't work so you move on to another one. Sometimes you are not happy with your consultant and you can ask to see another one.

I think UK MC is much better than other countries, it is clear about driving, work and things like irradiated flowers (in other countries you don't have this information).

When I live and worked in Netherlands they had just 1 strain of medical cannabis and that was ordinary flower. As they have the coffee shop culture, prescribed flower was more for low income individuals. You could get a better and cheaper flower at coffee shops. If you were willing to spend a little bit more you could get a much better quality than a prescribed flower by the dutch NHS.

Even with small hiccups with UKMC I think it is the best around as I understand. It is more comprehensive. The only thing is missing is the right to grow your own, a number of plants per household. I do not know if I am allowed to say this in here or I am crossing the line. Please let me know.

I would like so see some ice hash, static hash and other kinds of concentrate apart of those heavily, chemically extracted on UKMC. Shut up mate you talk too much!!! :):):):)
