Hi guys,
exactly one week ago today, I contacted Mamedica® and enquired about getting some medication for the first time. Initially, they booked me an appointment for 2 weeks later. I then got a phone call on the same day asking me if I wanted to have my appointment sooner and they offered me a next day appointment which I took. I had my consultation and was told I was eligible and a treatment plan was discussed. it only took 6 days from first contact before my first prescription arrived (Yesterday). Less than 7 days in total.

I have since tried my prescription, I got Farm Gas, Sour Cherry Punch and Platinum Garlic. All 3 seem to be very potent. The problem I have is I dislike the small and taste of all 3 strains. Its nothing like the sort of medication I had been using up until now. It tasted gassy/chemical like and didn't smell anywhere near what I was expecting. I don't want to be ungreatful, I'm incredibly grateful to be allowed to treat my issues using medical cannabis, but at the same time, Im going to find it difficult to use this months script just based on the bad taste.

Is this normal? Is medical cannabis just an entirely different beast compared to normal every day weed I have been using up until now? Can anybody help me with suggestions on strains that are closer to what I'm used to? A good example of the type of cannabis I have enjoyed in the past is traditional UK cheese. Pungent, pleasant smell and flavour. Rather than Gassy, chemical tasting or hay like smell and flavour.

I can't deny the potency of what I have and I appreciate the opportunity I have for my medication but I think I'm going to struggle if I cant find a flower and flavour profile I can get onboard with. Any advice will be greatly appreciated

It sounds like you gone for strains which all have fumey terpenes, petrol / diesel / funky ones

The strain availability is more like a spectrum - it does unfortunately take some time to get a feel of what's what, especially where many of us were used to years on the black market where you get whatever the person has got

Is there something in particualr you are looking for strain-wise / terpene-wise / etc? If you can share people will be able to recommend stuff

Welcome @lyndonia and glad to see you've been accepted onto Medical Cannabis and from reading your post it simply seems like strain selection I would suggest and there is the a wide range of strains available many fitting the profile you are more familiar with and I also shy away from more extreme tastes and myself and other members will gladly help you find the right sort of profile strain to suit your needs and I am looking at the moment at Black Cherry Punch which is a lot kinder on the senses

P.S. it was also a Drew video that gave me the same nudge in the right direction coming up to 2 years ago :)

If UK cheese (not been able to get such a one myself) is the only hint, I would say on your next script you want to spread your bets and then work from there. Sample recommendation below based on things which aren't gassy (the notes are my own, your mileage may vary):

High Silver ( Curaleaf or Find versions) - classic Sativa, earthy / peppery / floral

L. A. Confidential ( Aurora®) - classic Indica, sweet, candy-like, smells and tastes a bit like turkish delight to me

Atomic Sour Grapefruit ( Peace Naturals®) - Hybrid, fruity, citrus, sweet, floral

Hi Lank,
Thanks for the reply. My first set of strains were recommended to me in my consultation but I didn't really have any basis of comparison. On my next appointment, I will discuss again but its difficult for me to answer your questions on strains/terpenes as I really have no experience data all other than what I have bought on the street. As you have suggested, you just get what they have got so its going to be a process for me to start to understand terpenes and Limonene or Caryophyllene etc I'm going to like.
All I can say with some certainty is, I always loved cheese, I really ever managed to get it but when I did I was incredibly happy and I guess moving forward I'm looking for more traditionally flavoured strains. I want to avoid gassy or chemical like flavours but at the same time I also want to avoid strains that taste and smell like farmers hay.
I greatly appreciate any assistance I can get because for someone that believed himself to be an experienced user of 20+ years, I'm only now reallising that I know nothing.

Hi GrownHealth

Appreicate the reccomendation. Im genuinely amazed with this world I now find myself in since watching Drews video and giving it a go. Mamedica® turned this around so quickly for me that I'm left wishing I had known about this years ago.

I will ask about black cherry punch in my next appointment. Thank you

The same position I found myself in when I became a patient. 22 years on the black market getting 'whatever' and it turned out that despite all the cannabis experience I actually knew dick about terpenes / strains / etc

It's a mixed bag ride for me, I loved learning about it all in the early months, and I love trying new strains, but at the same time there is a real risk of wasting £50 - £100 on a 10g bag that either doesn't work for you, or in your case you aren't enjoying.

I'll just say don't worry about where you are, you'll get there and you'll learn. There's people here willing to answer questions and speed your catch-up so just let us know.

My rec. above for spreading your bets is similar to how I started, and from there I picked all my own based on similar terpene profiles, working out what mix and ratios of cannabinoids worked for me. Fingers crossed it's one tricky month and then you'll be able to avoid the gassy ones from there

No worries and just being around you'll soon get a feel of what strains suit you in plenty of time for your next appointments and another flavour profile that I'm finding a liking for are the strains containing Gelato's in as these tend to be more sweet than Gassy/chemically .
Here's one I really like that is smooth ,flavoursome and effective for me that has Gelato in its breeding. Just need it back in stock now 🤷‍♂️
Parents: Zkittlez (Hybrid) x Gelato #41 (Hybrid)

Welcome to the family, @lyndonia

Ah, the “gassy hay” surprise—many of us have been there! You’re not alone. Potency might pack a punch, but if the flavour profile makes you wince every time, it’s hardly therapeutic, right?

I’m with Alternaleaf, and while I usually order through Montu, I’ve had to (reluctantly!) go via IPS Pharma during low-stock crunches. I took a peek through the Mamedica listings on MedBud.wiki, and I think you’ve got some strong contenders that might match your palate better if you’re leaning toward that traditional UK “cheese” kind of profile.

Here are a few Mamedica strain options to explore that might be more to your taste:

Clearleaf® UBK T800 UK Cheese (Vape Cart) – if you’re open to vapes, this one might hit those nostalgic notes you’re craving.

Mamedica® CKHR T20 London Jealousy (Flower) – Hybrid with sweeter, funkier tones, a bit less sharp than the gassy strains.

Mamedica® Premium STG T27 Strawberry Gelato (Flower) – fruity, creamy, less chemically.

Clearleaf® SGP T21 Sugar Bomb Punch (Flower) – Hybrid with a more candy-sweet profile than chemical.

Mamedica® Premium CTB T28 Chatterbox (Flower) – great balance, and reportedly smoother on the nose.

Bonus tip: If flavour’s a dealbreaker, let your clinic or pharmacy know—it’s perfectly valid to request a strain change based on tolerability.

Give it a little time and don’t be shy about experimenting (within budget!). You’re definitely on the right path, and with a few tweaks, you’ll find your fit.

Thank you, i will defo experiment with these. It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who went through the "Gassy Hay" surprise :)

Haha, you’re never alone as a stoner—past or present!
We’ve just swapped rizlas and rooftops for prescriptions and terp talk. But that same energy, that sense of “we’ve got each other,” never left—it just evolved into the medical space.
Glad you’re feeling reassured, and here’s to finding strains that taste like comfort instead of compost!

Hi dude,

I hope the responses have helped out. Two of the strains I got are dry and fried with gamma rays, but one is awesome and helps my anxiety. Like any medication, I think it's about fine-tuning and working out what fits you, cannabis is incredibly varied - terpenes, cannabinoids, growing methods, drying, curing and so on, all these things go into making distinct plants that smoke/vape differently. With gassier strains, I've found vaping helpful! I'm going to continue trying different things until I can settle into a routine. The unknown is always difficult to cope with, but I feel secure knowing there are people who've been through it all here & they're willing to help each other.

I was super nervous in my first few appointments and found them difficult - I did not have much influence over the choice of strain, which is okay. I'm feeling more confident now, and MedBud helps - tracing terpenes, genetics and looking at flavours, and picking things you know appeal or are therapeutic might help. 🦥

IMO it’s just like guiness it’s an acquired taste you’ll get used to it lol

I am in month 10 on MC. I too was influenced by Drew and a few friends from the ACD Coffeeshop Forum & I joined Mamedica® - no complaints at all with them.
Top tips - Choose a strain and then search the reviews here and online before you buy. You will quickly find the most popular and most hated strains/producers/suppliers.
There are a few very good online 'technical' reviewers and some not-so technical but very entertaining. I follow https://www.youtube.com/@smacksalad and https://www.youtube.com/@Smokie_McGreen - and I have not been let down when I have purchased strains they have liked.
Non-irradiated flower is not guaranteed to be better than Beta irradiated imo but I avoid Gamma. Top suppliers for me - Peace Naturals®, 4C Labs, Green Karat
It is getting better by the month as new products and suppliers arrive, be patient and good luck picking the best strains.
