Flower Mega-Thread: Asking for Strain Recommendations

Im finding these strain names really off putting. Just looking at the formulary puts me off ordering anything sometimes! Especially when my usual are OOS.

It's all inherited from the recreational market, strain names are made by the original breeder - and if they're ever removed, it's like effectively anonymising the medication and removing credit from them.

There are very very few strains that were actually ever initially bred with medical-use in mind, and 95%+ are all just companies profiting from illicit creations (less so in recent years with it being legal to grow in several countries/states).

The industry has gone wild several times about strain names, and it does make many clinicians uncomfortable too - but I honestly don't see any other alternative without either discrediting the original breeder, or anonymising the history of where strains came from.

I like the idea of 4 character ref codes. So garlic skittles would be GCZS or something. Less off-putting but still retain breader credit if you look it up.

That's exactly how it is now in terms of registration titles, we just fully expand the names to always include original cultivars - which not all brands do any more.

Companies are only allowed to put cultivar/strain names in the small print on packaging these days too.

totally agree, "green crack" for example, as an extreme example. Yeah, it kinda funny that a doctor can prescribe Green crack, but still..

Just been watching an episode of the strainshow on YouTube “is this why all strains seem the same now”” essentially saying that the genetic / terpene profile of the MC market is very limited and strain names don’t really mean much?

Personally, I gave up on strain names years ago because I always struggled with the association. I did quite a few greenhouse grows in the 90s from seed (Skunk#1 Holland’s Hope Durban poison bag seed etc) and regularly got 4 different phenotypes from the same same batch of 6 seeds, lots of variety of smells tastes effects sizes flowering times etc .. there was variety but the bullshit cannabis strain name randomiser was still in its early days so most BM weed I purchased in he mid 90s was just called skunk.

ive tried 6 MC strains so far and none have resembled the strain name in terms of looks, smells or flavours although I have enjoyed them all to varying degrees.

For comparison all of the following products smell as per the product description. I think the whole name / strain / product description of cannabis could be improved..
