Welcome to the community and many of us here have used Cannabis for many years like yourself and finally found our legal home on Medical Cannabis
As for strains names I've got to say the mind boggles and currently there are nearly 400 strains available so it can get a bit er.. confusing to say the least but I find I look for what I know from the past and there are quite a few with the older more recognisable genetics about but like you say baby steps and you'll soon find your feet and members here will be only too happy to help as we've pretty much been in the same situation when onboarding to MC .
Welcome @Chewy ! Lots of info and details of all those strains you mention, everything you need to understand the process is here, dont be afraid to ask questions!
Thank you for the warm welcome. I will be dipping my feet into the all the info in the site. My experience with weed is somewhat old school, early 90,s basically it was what we called 'fish belly weed' mainly Jamaican, always full of seeds (even in a ten bag) but it was lovely stuff. Approaching 2000's things switched up, fish belly vanished (or became rare) and skunk took over . So to date i've been buying street, roughly 180 an ounce. I had no idea what kush, haze was it was all just weed lol. I have only just learned there are are two strains, one makes me sleepy, the other energetic. How I long for that fish belly high lol.
There's 100s aren't there! And some of them, despite sounding like nonsense tell a story on the strains' heritage and history.
As you say, baby steps!
The day flower/night flower thing is largely bullshit in the sense of Sativa/Indica. Terpenes are the best bet we have of understanding how the plant will affect us, and when thats missing relying on the parent strains (as you build an idea of what you like) can be a solid strategy.
There's so much to Cannabis, it's an incredible plant!
You're definitely not the only one who's had that reaction, it sounds like someone's let a marketing team loose in a sweet shop
It can feel overwhelming at first, but you'll pick it up quicker than you think, once you start focusing on terpene profiles, cannabinoid content, and how different strains actually affect you the names become a lot less important.
Baby steps is exactly the right approach, ask questions, take your time, and don't be afraid to ignore the flashy names, plenty of knowledgeable people here are always happy to help
